SYNOPSIS

MODULE OUTLINE//

SYNOPSIS

This module introduces the principles and methods of analysis, abstraction, and synthesis in design thinking that are common to many design fields, including building and architecture. The key emphasis of the studio is “User and Context”, which investigates the relationship between user and natural environment. In this studio, we will undertake a series of studio-based exercises; firstly, an investigation of the architectural spaces through prototype studies; and secondly, an exploration of form and space through architectural conceptualization. Finally, design a small freestanding building that meets user requirements and engages with the site context.

PROJECT//01

Famous Architects, Fabulous Houses – Diagrammatic Abstraction

The first project is an group assignment whereby we need to investigate how spaces are created from the making of architectural elements: architectonics - solid, planes, lines and frames.Upon completion of this project we must be able to achieve a level of understanding on the works assigned and will be able to apply the idea and concept in the subsequent project. The idea of using pure and diagrammatic models to express the architectural idea would also be in cooperated into this assignment.

// Ability to identify architects and their works

//Ability to ‘diagram’ and analyse architectural work of selected architect

// Understanding basic architectural compositions of solids, planes, lines and frames.

My group-mates are Tan chin werng , Yuen Xuan Hui, Goh Jyia Whey, Eric Lo and See wen Han. The building we got is The Deck House, Pahang by Choo Gim Wah. So, we have to produce a complete set of architectural drawings (scale of 1:100) and required to investigate &  formulate our findings into a set of 10 analysis diagrams and 10 diagrammatic models (8 x 8 x 8 cm).

PROJECT//02

TEA PAVILION - CAMERON HIGHLANDS

The main aim of Project 2 is to generate structure, form and space through architectural conceptualization which we are required to choose 2 ‘keywords’ from project 1, with the emphasis on the user requirement, ergonomics and site responding to develop an architectural proposition.

Project 2 will be divided into 2 stages; first in big group-A we are required to conduct site analysis of the physical context both at a macro & micro level of the overall site which included:

//Site plan

//Existing Structure

//Landscape

//Climatic Studies

//Circulation pattern

//Views and Vistas

//Activities

//Case Studies of BOH Cameron Highlands Visitor Centre and Tea Pavilion by Architectural Studio XYZ, Moscow Russia

After that, we will then proceed to a group of 2, to design a TEA pavilion with a maximum volume of 30m3. My group-mate is Yuen Xuan Hui we work well together to complete this project.  The site we chosen is near to the primary circulation that is easily accessible for people to have a stop and it's under tress to provide sufficient shading.The TEA pavilion we designed provided the activities of preparing, drinking, relaxing, viewing. .

PROJECT//03

WEEKEND LODGING

For the final project, students are required to further develop your TEA Pavilion project into a Weekend Lodging at Cameron Highlands. A Weekend Lodging denotes ‘A place where one escapes for relaxation, recreation and vacation for a short period of time.’ This Weekend Lodging must function as habitable architectural spaces to enable the activity associated with living, dining, showering, cooking, storage and such within the built up space of 150 m2.

This final project extends the understanding of design concept and process. It introduces the notion of architectural space making through the design of a user specific architectural scheme. This project explores the relationship between architectural tectonics, function and space in architecture.

My weekend lodging it's to promote appreciation of different aspects. So unlike an ordinary house, the design concept is all about interlocking of spaces and volume. The exploration about the light and shadow " A space without sunlight is a dead space" so it create another kind of experience by the natural light that cast into shadow. My weekend lodging is in between two mountain which the river is below. From the right to the left, an enclosed entrance to a totally exposed space.
