METHODS OF DOCUMENTATION AND MEASURED DRAWINGS

[ ARC 60305 ]

MODULE OUTLINE//

SYNOPSIS

The subject aims to develop an understanding of the principles of building preservation/conservation and the methods of recording it in three documentation methods; measured drawings, written documentation and photographic documentation. The ideas of application and management of architectural historic documentation will be presented as part of the overall knowledge of building preservation/conservation. For measured drawings, we are to document historically and architecturally significant buildings in the form of as-built drawings. The task requires students in a group that involve fieldworks consisting of measuring techniques such as photographing, sketching, using of theodolite and measuring tapes. The outcomes of the subject are collection of plans, sections, elevations, details and axonometric views / models; complemented with a report that explains about the background, history, concept, style construction technics and ornamentation of the building

PROJECT//01

On-site Observation Journal

The first project is an individual project where we were required to observe, sketch and document the physical and the immediate context of the site.It can be from an element as broad as the urban planning itself down to the smallest detail of the ornaments used in the building.

Some of the physical aspects may include building or structure; physical context such as overall urban layout, street furniture; traditional transport and cultural aspects that can be captured also are people of the place doing their daily activities.

PROJECT//03

Measured Drawing & Model

This is the final project for this module that carried out throughout the semester where we will be assigned to measure and document a historical / architecturally significant or heritage building and translate all the data into a set of drawings. We have to only measure one particular building assigned by the course coordinator. Apart from doing the measuring exercise on site, we will also need to do additional research in order to fully understand the architectural and cultural attributes of the building. The model will provide additional physical information of the building.

FINAL MODEL

REFLECTION//

Throughout this semester I had actually learned a lot. Of course, I have improved my

leadership skills to guide juniors and also learned something  from them as well. Among the others, our group can be list as the largest group which we have 40 peoples to work on, cooperation take such important for us to accomplish this assignment.

Last but not least, I learnt a lot in using softwares, especially Autocad which is my first time using it to do annotation, line weights, add in details and etc. Also improved skills in using Revit. I feel really pleasure to work with my groupmates although it's tiring but I have such good memories through my journey in degree!
