MODULE OUTLINE//

SYNOPSIS

This module is structured as an introduction to architectural design. This preliminary design module aims to present and explains design through the expression of the perception of ‘self’ and the body. Students will undertake a series of studio-based exercises and assignments that introduces the fundamental methods, principles and approaches in design thinking and basic spatial design.

PROJECT//01

SELF- EXPRESSION THROUGH OBJECT "REPRESENTING ME"

The first project is an individual assignment whereby we need to figure out our creative side and inner self through several specific modes of communication or art form. We generate ideas from a Pokemon character, self-identity through personal interests, preferences, attitude and personality and later on apply them to an actual model or 3D artwork. The artwork which represents ourself must be interpreted in abstracted form by using the design principles and element then select, explore and apply the materials to represent 'self'.

The keywords that I've chosen is insecure and rigid transformed to flexible. I expressed it by making it enclosed and using ribbon to create a flow to represent the process  from rigid to more flexible. I have learned to explore different possibilities of generating ideas through design process and also approaches in translating ideas and abstracting translation.

PROJECT//02

SELF- EXPRESSION THROUGH OBJECT "REPRESENTING ME"

The main aim of Project 2 is to expand the interpretation of the users by exploring the relationships between human body and designed form. We as the users will define the intention of the space and its form based on certain personality traits and human body. In this project we will also be introduced to an overview of building and architecture, experiencing the spatial quality of a basic structure, as well as practical aspects of design such as ventilation, lighting, structure, and material.

Project 2 will be divided into 2 stages; first we shall explore the notions of scale and proportion.  This is done through a series of exploratory in-class exercises where we explore human form (anthropometry). We will then progress on to understanding how the human body relates to space, and further developing an understanding of scale and proportion in relationship with body and space. Through a series investigations involving scaled study models and the final design will then be produced as a 1:1 scale assembly and installation work.

I group with Juergen to complete this shelter and we named it as The White Solitary , a shelter to hide because we want to be alone. The form is actually inspired by a shell.

PROJECT//03

Dreamspace for the User ‘SPACE FOR THE SELF’

For the final project, students are required to design a space for the self by attaching it to the walls/surfaces of an imagined ‘city’ in an empty abandoned lot in between two buildings. As the user of the space we can make our personality more interesting, an effective well thought of theme and written narrative is essential.

This understanding is to be architecturally translated into a series of connected spaces (2-3 spaces) that successfully establishes the quality and articulation of the interior and of exterior design. Concept shall evidently show the experiential and spatial quality. We need to consider how well design conforms to both the physical and non-physical requirements of the user.

Study Models

Final project will be in 3 stages:

Task 1- is narrative writing wherein it can be based on the persona, life scenario, story and journey of the user from where or which the theme of the hideout will be extracted.

Task 2- is about exploring how to organize the 2-3 spaces which encompass design principles in spatial relationships and organization.

Task 3- to generate and exploring ideas and concept from the narrative and spatial exploration, we will also explore the notions and experiential effects of materials and the senses in the final design.

IN BETWEEN SOUCIANT

My dreamspace is in a rural setting because I'm actually a nature lover, insouciance person like me is easy going I like to make friends so there'll be a public space for gathering purpose. But in contrast I'm solitary as well I need a private space for me to hide , to be alone for deep thoughts. My hideout is like a journey of my life from the bottom to the top-roof. Using irregular form to stand out from others, I want to be indifference.
