MODULE OUTLINE// 

SYNOPSIS

A module which intended to inform the students the relevant physical and chemical properties of a wide range of building materials. This module also encompasses the broad environment debate by including energy saving and recycled materials. With the aim of ensuring the appropriate application within the awareness of suitability of the physical and chemical properties as well as ecological impact, the material's manufacturing process, salient properties and typical uses are introduced.

 

PROJECT//01

FAMOUS ARCHITECT

The first project is to conduct a case study based on a building selected of the chosen respective architect  then identify the types of materials used in the building with minimum three of the following materials; stones; glass; concrete and bricks. Thus, we need to explain the characteristic of the materials, suitability of materials for the building design and the expression of materials towards the building design. In a group of 3, I worked along with Chin werng and Xuan hui together for this project. 

For the final submission, we are required to include all the findings in 2-A2 presentation boards which include architect and building's background, floor plans,elevations, sections, description of materials and the sample of materials.

PROJECT//02

“Form, Space & Pattern: An Experiential Exploration”

There are two main task need to be carried out for this project Task A (group) and Task B (individual). For Task A,we are in a group of 6 to select an exciting commercial building that can give us experience in exploring most of the building materials covered in the module, For my group, we selected "Paradigm Mall" for our case study. We need to produce 2- A2 presentation boards includes brief intro, identification of materials, application of materials and 1 mood board with photographs.

 

For the individual part, we need to produce 1 A2 board  which includes the design intention and concept of the chosen space and the space analysis. 

 

REFLECTION

Through the projects, I have deeper understanding of materials and the usage of each material within a space or building also learned to produce a complete documentation and analysis of materials in respect to physical and chemical properties. Moreover, I am also able to identify the various types of building material and the effect of the building materials on aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building. I also understand the appropriateness of material used in context of several factors for a building or design. Lastly, I have also learned to explain material usage using diagrams, drawings and words clearly through proper presentation boards.
