SYNOPSIS

The subject explores the history of South, Southeast and East Asian architecture as a whole within a systematic treatment of architectural design and construction, building science and technology, garden design and city planning through three key themes: sustainability, tradition and modernity & globalisation. These themes will guide the organisation of weekly lecture and projects, which will proceed from the establishment of a basic theoretical apparatus to the examination of specific cases. We will develop understanding on Asian architecture and urbanism and interpret Asian architectural language through research poster and oral presentation

PROJECT//01

Research in Asian Architecture

In a group of 5-6 persons, we need to select ONE specific research area ( Heritage and conservation, Vernacular & traditional architecture, Modernity in Asian architecture & Contextual Architecture) which we intent to investigate through extensive literature review to identify the specific topic/ issues/

significance of study and then define specific scope of study.

As our group chosen traditional chinese building material- Timber that became

challenges faced by Cheng Hoon Teng temple which is listed under Unesco World Heritage site. Through all the research, I have gained a lot about the historical and chronological transitions of Asian architectural history as well as how important in conserving heritage buildings which provides a sense of identity and continuity in a fast changing world for future generations. Also, well represent the past history and culture of a nation.

Besides, I learned that conducting a good research paper aren't an easy job especially you have to analyse all the collected findings to appropriate sentences that help the reader to understand better. However, it's a great practise for us to learn how to conduct a good research.

PROJECT//02

Contextual Architecture

In this project, we are required to analyse how the selected architectural design respond to its contexts. Findings from the study is presented in the form of A2 presentation visual.Project are required to identify a building in Asia in a sub-urban context which i intent to investigate through observation and readings on contemporary Contextual Architecture practices and issues in Asia.Based on the selected building, conduct analysis on its Contextual Architecture elements.

I chosen S11 House for my case study, because I feel that it's quite interesting as a residential building and how it reflects to the context. Through the research, I am now able to analyse how the selected architectural design respond to the Malaysia's tropical climate and context. Besides, I have also learnt that how important contextual take into consideration of architects to design responds to its surroundings successfully, creating the impression that the building “belongs.” which building would blend seamlessly into its environment, not only maintaining the context, but also enhancing it. Lastly, I had enhanced my analytical and digital skills to provide an appropriate visual communication design with clarity of informations.
